Born in Newmarket in Q2-1886 [Newmarket 3b:556] eldest son of John and Elizabeth TURNER (née PILBROW) of 6 Melton Cottages, Park
Lane, Newmarket.
1891 census...Ernest [5] was at 6 Melton Cottages, Newmarket with his father John [28] stableman born Snailwell, his mother Elizabeth [27] born Bury St Edmmunds, and his brothers Henry [3], John [2] and James J [3 months] all born in Newmarket. 1901 census...Ernest [16] was a waiter at the White Hart Hotel, High Street,Newmarket. His parents and brother Henry and John had moved to Nat Flatman Street, Newmarket. 1911 census...Ernest [25] was still a waiter at the White Hart. His parents had moved to 10 Turf Terrace, All Saints Road, Newmarket with his brother James who was a ship's steward. He quite possibly married Gertrude M STURGEON in Newmarket in Q3-1916 who was Newmarket born and worked in a pub in Cambridge in 1911 but her address was later given by CWGC as Mrs TURNER of Springhead, Lees, nr Oldham. |

It is not possible to locate where and when Ernest may have been wounded. His battalion were not heavily engaged anywhere early in April, some deaths occuring
in the Arras area. Since Etaples was a base hospital there is no way of working it out without Ernest's military records.
